Obituary of Siv Safwat

Mrs. Siv Safwat, a long time resident of Darien, CT, died in Darien on Tuesday, December 7, 2010. The cause of death was complications from cervical cancer. Born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1917, she had come to America at the age of 17 after her parents had died to go to school. She graduated from Adelphi College, L.I., NY with a B.S. degree in organic chemistry, after which she attended Columbia University in New York City and the University of California, Berkeley, where she received an M.S. degree in organic chemistry. She was married there to Mostafa Safwat, an Egyptian, also a student of chemistry. They had a son, Samir Safwat. In 1945, they moved to Egypt, where a second son was born, but they separated five years later. Mrs. Safwat moved with her sons back to her native Sweden. In Sweden, she worked as a patent examiner for the Swedish government. After ten years, the three moved to America and to Darien where Mrs. Safwat worked at American Cyanamid Company in Stamford, CT as a patent agent for 27 years before retiring. Mrs. Safwat was predeceased by her former husband and by her eldest son, Samir Safwat. The younger son, Omar Safwat, still resides in Darien.
