Obituary of Evelyn Ehrich Andrew
Please share a memory of Evelyn to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Evelyn Ehrich Andrew died in her sleep on January 12 at age 85 in Wilton, Connecticut. The daughter of William Christian Ehrich and Minnie Bell Peer Ehrich, she was born in Laclede, Missouri, on the family farm. She graduated at the top of her class in high school and pursued her studies at Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, Missouri. Having started her career in Kansas City, Missouri, she later worked at United Carbon in Houston, Texas, where she met her future husband, Charles Fleming Andrew, an economist. They moved to Darien, Connecticut in 1971. Her most recent residence was The Greens at Cannondale in Wilton, Connecticut where she moved from Darien after her husband's passing in 2008.
After her marriage Evelyn focused on starting a family and then returned to work at GTE in Stamford, Connecticut, where she was an insurance and pensions administrator. She had many interests and talents and was active in the community. She was a member of various clubs including the Darien Community Association (DCA), the Silvermine Golf Club, the Goodwives Investment Club, and the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut. She volunteered at the Darien Thrift Shop and played bridge with the DCA for many years.
She is survived by her two daughters Alison Lee Andrew of Guilford, Connecticut, and Alisa Andrew of Newtown, Connecticut; Alisa's husband Robert T. Neal, also of Newtown, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband Evelyn is predeceased by four siblings: Christine Wirtz, Ivan William Ehrich, Alice Gene Rosinski, and Ruth Horton.
Evelyn added her flourish to life, whether with her repeated strikes in bowling, her famous hole in one, her flair for decorating and fashion, her Japanese flower arrangements, or her gracious entertaining. She enjoyed traveling to New London, New Hampshire, with the family and later to many locations abroad with Charles. Both she and Charles supported the arts, including local theater, the Stamford Symphony Orchestra, and the Metropolitan Opera.
During the five years she spent at The Greens at Cannondale, Evelyn was beloved by the staff. Even as she became increasingly limited in her mobility and speech, she retained her humor, sang along with the group, and would smile brightly at those around her, spreading warmth.
Evelyn committed herself to the endeavors she chose, and was depended upon by others to work tirelessly on projects such as her investment club's tax filings and leading her 9-Holers golf group at Silvermine. Likewise, she was devoted to her husband Charles, nurturing him as he battled cancer for many years.
Memorial services will be held at Saint Luke's Parish Chapel, 1864 Post Road, Darien, on March 15 at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Person-to-Person at 1864 Post Road, Darien, CT 06820 or P2Phelps.org.
