Obituary of Donald J. Maihock

Donald J. Maihock, age 88, a resident of Stamford for many years, died peacefully on February 15, 2011 at the Richard L. Rosenthal Hospice Residence in Stamford. Donald was born on August 13, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois. He was the son of the late John August Maihock and Anne (Radloff) Maihock. In 1944 he graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. During World War II, he joined the Navy and became an officer in the Navy Civil Engineering Corps. known as the Seabees. He was part of the Philippine Liberation Campaign in the Pacific with General MacArthur's forces. He later transferred to the 96th Construction Battalion at Tsingtao, China as the transportation officer responsible for extending a former Japanese airstrip to accommodate the Marine planes.
After his discharge from the Navy, Donald held several engineering positions with Alvord, Burdick & Howson, International Minerals & Chemical Corp. and Martin Marietta. In 1965, he joined North American Philips Corp., at their Manhattan headquarters, where he became the Director of Facilities Planning, involved with the design and construction of their major facilities. He remained with North American Philips for 22 years until his retirement at age 65.
Donald was an active member of St. Francis Episcopal Church in Stamford where he served on the vestry for 14 years, 11 as senior warden. He later became a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Darien, where he and his wife, Audrey, enjoyed singing in the choir.
In retirement, Donald served on the board of St. Luke's Lifeworks of Stamford, developing housing for the homeless. Above all he was passionate about singing barbershop harmony with choruses, in particular, The Golden Chordsmen of Westchester and the Senior Songsters of the Senior Men's Association of Stamford.
Donald is survived by his wife, Audrey Maihock, to whom he was married for nearly 63 years. He is also survived by his daughters Elizabeth Maihock Beloff (son-in-law Jim Beloff) of Clinton, CT and Suzanne Maihock Stevens of Barrington Hills, IL and his grandchildren Margaret Anne Stevens and Peter Hayes Stevens, III. He was predeceased by his son-in-law, Peter Hayes Stevens, Jr.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, March 20, 2011 at 1 p.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Chapel, 1864 Post Road in Darien, CT. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Luke's Lifeworks of Stamford. www.stlukeslifeworks.org
