Catherine "Kay" Schumaecker, a 56-year resident of Darien passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 surrounded by her loving family and friends. Catherine Marie Stuart was born May 19, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois. She was a 1940 graduate of Harper High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society. She met her husband of 65 years, J.W. "Bill" Schumaecker while working at the American Can Company in Chicago. Bill's job brought them to Darien where they raised four children. Kay worked as a paralegal at Rucci and Reardon in Darien and later for Winthrop, Stimson, Putnam and Roberts in Stamford. Kay was active in the Darien community as a volunteer at the United Way and as a troop leader for the Girl Scouts. She enjoyed being a parishioner of St. John's R.C. Church. She had a lifelong love of learning and was a voracious reader who encouraged her children to do the same. Although she was a skilled seamstress and an avid gardener, her true passion and devotion centered around her family. She is survived by four children and their spouses; Michael and Pat Schumaecker of New York City and Orleans, MA; Kathleen and T. Robert Kelley of Littleton, CO; Patricia Fitzgerald and Michael Neschleba of Acton and East Orleans, MA; and Debi and Chuck Hibben of Darien; grandchildren include; Charlie, Jenny and Kim Hibben of Darien, Dr. Matthew Schumaecker and wife, Laura of Roanoke, VA; Kathryn Schumaecker-Kaye and husband Chris of Los Angeles, CA Beth Schumaecker of Brooklyn, NY, Michael Fitzgerald and wife Priscilla of Denver, CO and Brian Fitzgerald and fiance Courtney Smith of Lakewood, CO. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren; Simone, Sophia and Sebastian Schumaecker of Roanoke and Ryder Fitzgerald of Denver. She was predeceased by her husband Bill in 2009. Friends are invited to greet the family and celebrate her life on Sunday, April 27th at the Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John R.C.
