Obituary of Fred Allen La Greca
Please share a memory of Fred to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Fred Allen La Greca, 63, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 3, 2011 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Fred was born on October 2, 1947 in New York City to Joseph and Julia La Greca. Fred grew up in Astoria, NY and Lakewood, NJ. His father Joe, aka Joey La Grey, was a middleweight prize fighter and his Godfather was comedian Fred Allen, both a great source of pride for Fred.
After graduating from William Cullen Bryant High School, Fred played linebacker and offensive guard for the Long Island Chiefs, a semi-pro football team that served as the practice squad for the New York Jets and Giants. In 1966, he ended his football career and boarded a plane for Brazil where he spent two years on an amazing adventure in the rainforest.
Fred was a man of many endeavors; working the ice cream division for Schraffts, Stouffers, and Bordens before opening "Sweet Sensations" in Bronxville, NY. Founded as a chocolatier, it serves as a source of many great stories and fond family memories. Fred and Sherry sold the business in 1985 and relocated their growing family to Darien. He established a niche for himself in commercial real estate, eventually becoming a partner at Appraisal Services in Stamford. Fred is very proud that his son Christopher will continue in the business.
Fred was blessed by a large and loving family. He was married to the love of his life, Sharon Blish for almost 39 years. They met at the Pig and Whistle in Manhattan when Sherry was 22. Sherry was immediately attracted to how comfortable he made everyone feel.
He is survived by daughters, Julie and her husband Brett Cameron; Aimee and her husband Bill Kattler; Kimberly and her husband Ethan Reid; and a son Christopher and his wife Megan Anne Knickel. Fred was a beloved Poppie to ten grandchildren; Tucker and Jackson Cameron; Ashli, Billy, Cassidy, Joey and Max Kattler; Charlotte and Theodore Reid; and little Blakely June LaGreca. He was also survived by his dog, Pepper.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Thomas More R. C. Church, 374 Middlesex Road in Darien on Friday, March 11, 2011 at 11:00 AM. www.lawrencefuneralhome.com
