William R. Doughman (Bill) of Darien CT passed away on April 19, 2014 surrounded by his family. He was born on October 1, 1921 in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Francis K. Doughman and Ferman C. Doughman. In his early years, he resided in Springfield, MA prior to moving to Stamford, CT.
A graduate of Roanoke College in Salem, VA, Bill proudly served his country in the U. S. Navy during WWII, honorably discharged in November 1945. On September 20, 1952, he married his true love, Edna Mae West. He and his wife resided in Darien for over 60 years.
Bill was a chemist for the American Cyanamid Co. in Stamford CT until his retirement in 1986. He also worked at Ring's End Lumber Co. in Darien for over 30 years. Bill is survived by his children: William W. Doughman (Gaelen) of Stone Ridge, NY; Mary Sue Cotton (Donald) of Needham, MA; and Deborah Szilagyi (John) of North Granby, CT. He is also survived by his 7 grandchildren: Kara Austin (Matthew) of Rochester, NY; Christopher Doughman (Elizabeth) of East Falmouth, MA: Jacob, Emma and Jared Cotton of Needham, MA; Jennifer and Nicole Szilagyi of North Granby, CT. Bill was predeceased by his wife, Edna Mae in 2001. Bill also leaves many close friends and neighbors in Darien, CT and Wolfeboro, NH.
Always keeping busy, Bill was a longtime member of the Darien Senior Men's Association; The Piedmont Club of Darien; The Darien YMCA, He volunteered for Meals on Wheels and the American Red Cross. Bill was also a long time member of the Darien Sewer Commission, serving as Chairman and on the Zoning Board of Appeals. He also enjoyed spending summers in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire for many years.
A memorial service for Bill will be held on Saturday May 10 at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Boston Post Rd., Darien. Friends will be received from 12 noon 2 pm. A memorial service will begin at 2 pm followed by burial at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Darien/Stamford Chapter of the American Red Cross, Darien EMS Post 53 or donor's charity of choice.
