Obituary of Marjorie Elizabeth Bain

Marjorie Elizabeth Bain, 92, of Norwalk, died Wednesday, March 30, 2011 in Norwalk Hospital of natural causes. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard C. Bain. Born in New Haven, CT on October 31, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Nelson Leroy Root and Emily Louisa Bruen. She was a graduate of Hillhouse High School in New Haven and attended Colby Junior College. After graduating from Katherine Gibbs, she worked for United Illuminating in New Haven. She was married in 1942. Her husband was a graduate of Yale University and Yale law School. Prior to his death in 1982, he was chairman of Empire Savings Bank in New York City. They moved to Norwalk in 1951. She had been an active member of the First Congregational Church of Darien for many years. Marge, as she was known, is survived by her four children, Richard, Jr. of Norwalk; Marilyn Garland of Norwell, MA; Barbara Lay of Columbia, MD; and Joanne Sweet of Nashua, NH; and two sisters, Shirley Reid of Woodstock, GA and Janice Gathman of Albuquerque, NM. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was greatly loved and will be deeply missed by all her family and friends. Friends may call at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien on Saturday, April 2, 2011 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM. A private family interment will be held at Spring Grove Cemetery.
