Obituary of Paul Kalvaitis

Paul Kalvaitis, age 91, of Darien, CT, passed away on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at the Richard Rosenthal Hospice residence in Stamford. He was the husband of Edith Balne Kalvaitis for 60 years. He resided in Darien for 46 years having moved here in 1964.
Born on April 6, 1920 in Welch, WV, he was the son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Kalvaitis. He was an alumnus of Welch High School, Welch, WV. He worked in the coal mines in Welch, WV prior to World War II. He served as a Staff Sergeant with the Chemical Warfare Service of the Army Air Force during World War II, including almost two years of duty in India.
Mr. Kalvaitis worked for 28 years for Russell, Burdsall & Ward of Port Chester, NY, and 21 yeas for King Industries of Norwalk, CT. After retirement, he continued as a part-time guard for King Industries until 2007. He was a member of the International Association of Machinists (IAM).
He is survived by his wife, Edith Kalvaitis and two sons, Robert D. Kalvaitis of Sierra Madre, CA and Ronald D. Kalvaitis of Harwinton, CT. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Shannon Toma of San Diego, CA and Cheryl Fonti of Gloucester, MA and six great grandchildren, Gabriella Olivia, Jessica and Vanessa Fonti; and Anthony and Damian Toma. A sister, Helen Smith, also survives. He was predeceased by a son, Royal P. Kalvaitis; a brother Karl Kalvaitis; and three sisters, Anne Kalvaitis, Mary Carino and Nellie Cicco.
The family will receive friends at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 from 5:00 to 6:00 PM. A Memorial Service will follow at 6:00 PM.
