Obituary of Stephen Holbrook Beach

Stephen Holbrook Beach, a resident of Darien since 1965, died at Stamford Hospital on Friday, February 15, 2008.
Stephen Holbrook Beach was born June 3, 1915 in Highland Park, MI. The son of Stephen Holbrook Beach and Katherine Jean Campbell, he is survived by his wife Mary Mulvihill Beach; his son Stephen Holbrook Beach III; daughter Jennifer Katherine Beach-Buda; their spouses Christine Henderson Beach and Gary Lee Buda and grandchildren Rosalind Beach Buda and Travers Buda, John Campbell Beach and Thomas Whittaker Beach.
He was a direct descendant of Richard Beach of County Kent in England who was one of the original two hundred "Proprietors" who received a charter to found the New Haven Colony in Connecticut in1639. The family lived in Connecticut until his grandfather, a Minister, was transferred to a church in Michigan. Most of the Beaches still live in the New Haven and Wallingford area.
Mr. Beach was a Captain and chief legal officer under General Kirk of the Small Arms Division of Army Ordinance from 1943 to 1946.
He had an AB with honors in Political Science from Kalamazoo College and an LLB cumlaude from the University of Detroit. He did postgraduate work at Georgetown University and Columbia University. He was admitted to the Bar in Michigan in 1941, the U.S. District Court in New York in 1941, the U.S. Supreme Court in 1944, in New York 1947, the District of Columbia in 1949 and Connecticut in 1975.
In 1946, he joined a Wall Street law firm, Winthrop, Stimson, Putnam and Roberts. In 1948, he was a partner in Cann, Lamb and Kitelle. He went back to a Wall Street firm, Wilkie, Farr, Gallagher, Walton and Fitzgerald from 1956 to 1960. He then joined IBM, as a staff attorney when IBM decided to expand their legal department. He became General Counsel and Secretary of the Supplies Division, and then General Counsel and secretary of the Service Bureau Corp., a division of IBM. In 1976, he was vice president and general counsel of Data Services, Control Data Corporation in Greenwich, CT. He became General Counsel Computor Corporation, Control Data Corp. then associate general counsel, Senior Vice President of telecommunications policy and corporate secretary.
In 1985, he retired from Corporate work and went back into private practice, first with Rogers, Hoge and Hills in White Plains, NY then into his own practice in Greenwich and Stamford, CT.
He was on the Board of Directors and Corporate Secretary of Dataware Technologies, and American firm with offices in Germany and England.
He was a member of the Connecticut Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, the District of Columbia Bar Association, the Association of Data Processings Organization, Wee Burn Country Club, Ocean Club of Florida and St. Luke's Episcopal Church.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 1864 Post Road, Darien on Saturday, February 23, 2008 at 11:00 AM. Interment will be private at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien. The Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, Darien is handling the arrangements.
