Obituary of Eleanor Clark Allen

Eleanor Clark Allen of New Canaan died on June 20, 2011 at the age of 93. She was the wife of Joseph H. Allen who survives her and to whom she was married for 70 years. They resided in Darien for 50 years before moving to their home in New Canaan. Born in Coloma, Wisconsin, on October 2, 1917 to Hulda Wichner Clark and Rollin J. Clark, she grew up in Ladysmith, Wisconsin. She attended Lawrence University and subsequently pursued a multi-year teaching career in the Wisconsin education system. Mrs. Allen was committed to her communities, her many friends, and to such organizations as the Stamford Hospital and Children’s Aid for which she volunteered and chaired committees for over 30 years. Well known and highly respected as an organizer and player in the local bridge world, she professed and demonstrated that bridge kept her young. She also took great pleasure in hostessing friends and family at home and at the family’s mountain home in Vermont. Mrs. Allen is also survived by her three children: David Allen of Millbrook, New York, Elisabeth Adams of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and Melinda Beardsley of Darien, Connecticut, 5 grandchildren: Ben Adams, Colleen Cary, Amy Adams, Ryan Cary and Lauren Beardsley, one great grandchild, Allen Adams, and her older sister, Gertrude O’Connor. A memorial service will held at the Noroton Presbyterian Church, 2011 Post Road of Darien on Thursday, June 30 at 11:00 am.
