Obituary of Gerard G. Blackwedel

Gerard G. Blackwedel of Old Lyme passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2008 after a lengthy illness at the home of his daughter in New Milford surrounded by his family. Jerry was born in Brooklyn, New York on June 24, 1926. He joined the 82nd Airborne Division as a paratrooper in September of 1944 and was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He met his future wife, Alice Lynn, while on leave in Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania with his good friend Gene Lynn. He and Alice married on July 17, 1948. Jerry was employed by General Electric and then Burndy Corporation as a tool and dye maker and moved with Alice to Darien in 1952. They had three children, Anne Marie, William Henry and Alice Lynn. Jerry is also survived by four grandchildren, Marianne, Robert, Timmy and Christopher and one great-grand child, Conner. Jerry was an avid boater and fisherman and was a member of the Power Squadron and the Darien Boat Club. Many lovely weekends were spent on the Long Island Sound with family and friends aboard the 'Bonus'. Jerry moved to Old Lyme in 2001 and continued his hobbies of woodworking and gardening. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 3rd at 1pm at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Old Lyme Ambulance Association or the New Milford VNA Hospice would be appreciated by the family.
