Obituary of Arthur Charles Mehos

Arthur Charles Mehos, 64, passed away unexpectedly on July 9 from complications of Parkinson's disease.  Born on April 5, 1962, in New York City and raised in Darien, Connecticut, Art devoted his life to teaching, coaching, and quietly making the lives of others better.

Art graduated from The Lawrenceville School in New Jersey before earning both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Boston University. Most recently, he taught history and coached football, basketball, and baseball at Avon Old Farms in Connecticut.

A gifted teacher and devoted coach, Art dedicated his life to education, inspiring generations of students and student-athletes. In the classroom, on the field, or in extracurricular settings, Art's students always felt supported. Whether it was giving a student a ride, offering advice, or quietly helping someone through adifficult time, he was always there when he was needed. In any facet of student life, Art was undoubtedly "Coach Mehos."

Art possessed a dry, understated sense of humor that endeared him to everyone who knew him. Easy going and genuinely funny, he always made people feel comfortable. His unpretentious nature put people at ease, and he had a remarkable ability to keep things in perspective. Never one to look for recognition, he was a trusted mentor and a lifelong friend to countless former students, athletes, and colleagues. He was also an unwavering New York Mets fan, remaining loyal through every heartbreaking loss and every improbable victory.

Above all, family was at the center of Art's life. He was a devoted son, a loving brother and brother-in-law,and a beloved uncle. His nieces and nephews adored him, and some of their happiest memories are of playing games, sharing laughs, and trading jokes with their Uncle Art.

Art was predeceased by his father, Charles Mehos. He is survived by his mother, Rita Mehos; his brother, Harris Mehos; his brother, Stephen Mehos and his wife, Meg; his sister, Lia Mehos and her husband, Joe; his cherished nieces and nephews, Alexandra, Charlie, Michael, and Lena; as well as many treasured cousins. And, of course, his beloved canine companion, Abby.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Art's life at a visitation on Wednesday, July 15, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m with a prayer service at 6:00 p.m. at Lawrence Funeral Home in Darien. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 16, at 10:00 a.m. with a visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Church of the Archangels in Stamford, with burial to follow at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Art's memory to the Parkinson's Foundation or the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
