Art (the other one) Custer posted a condolence
Wednesday, July 15, 2026
It would be impossible to measure the impact this absolute legend has had on Avon Old Farms and on the thousands of students he worked with. Today, tomorrow, next week and next year, there will be people doing the right thing at least in part because of their interactions with Art. Whenever Avonians get together, their conversations will come around to Art, and their smiles will will grow wide as they recount the memories.

Art was always the first one to camp meetings with donuts. He always reached out to check in on me, always wished me a happy national donut day & was someone I considered a true friend, not only a coach and mentor. I will miss the random check ins from him.. he was a great man! This photo is from working with him at Dave Cowens Basketball Camp; his “workout” lecture, followed by the famous wrestling skit.

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Mr.Mehos since 2009/2010, whether it was dog sitting or just popping over to chat he was someone I could always turn to. He was such a pleasure to be around, I’m happy I’ve had the privilege to watch not just Abby but both of his dogs. He was like a second dad to me and I will never forget him or his kindness. My condolences to the family. May your legacy forever live on

30 years separated my time at Avon Old Farms from our son's time there. Art was there for both of us. For me it was 1993. The son of a nurse and insurance salesman, I found myself on a campus (and in a world) I didn't know existed. To my great fortune, Art Mehos would become my dorm parent in Elephant. Always supportive and always fair, he held us accountable. It was a different time back then - pay phones in the hallways, no internet, and Johnny G to 'wake' us in the mornings. There was a demanding cadence about AOF - a cadence that didn't sync with 'real time' but taught us how to dig deeper - how to bring out better - and how to work through different.
Fast forward to 2022. The same would be true for Austin '25 but this time coming from Charlotte, NC. A teacher, a coach, a pillar that transcended our collective experience of Avon Old Farms.
Art never forgot anything. I rarely missed an opportunity to visit with him on trips back to campus. Refectory lunch, dinner in town, or a casual discussion in his apartment (with Abby of course). On a visit last year to watch one of Austin's baseball games, I was with my Mom and my sister - and he remembered they were from Orange...because that's where I was from. He didn't forget much - including detailed discussions we had had 10,15,20 years earlier. He was genuinely interested and always listened. Thanks for the rides to town, the support and chuckles, and of course -- the endless trips to Dunkin' You were a treasure for the Brotherhood. Aspirando et Perseverando - Rest easy.

I’m not alone in saying that Mr. Mehos was one of my favorite coaches and teachers of all my school days. And, I was fortunate to have him as a colleague and true friend when I joined the faculty at Avon Old Farms. I will miss him and am grateful for all the time I had to spend with him.
