Walter Maxwell Miller, 82, of Darien, CT and Winhall, VT, beloved husband of Mary Kiefer Miller, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2026.

Walt was born on November 2, 1943 in Morgantown, WV to Edward and Jean Miller, and was raised in Silver Spring, MD. He graduated from Good Counsel High School in Olney, MD in 1961. At 16 years old, Walt met the love of his life, Mary. They were married in 1965, sharing 60 years together, four children, and twelve grandchildren. Walt's unwavering love, devotion, and support of his wife and family remained his greatest priority throughout his life.

He earned a BS in Engineering Science and Mechanics from the Pennsylvania State University in 1965, an MBA from the University of Chicago in 1968, and a Master's in International Business from the University of Louvain in Belgium in 1969.

Walt began his professional career with McKinsey & Co., where he spent eight years as a consultant, advising leading organizations on strategy and operations. He then transitioned into executive leadership as Vice President and General Manager of the Electrical Division at Napa Echlin, Inc.

Walt then spent 19 years with Becton Dickinson & Co., a global leader in medical devices and laboratory diagnostics. He held various leadership roles and retired in 1999 as Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Development. For the remainder of his life, he served as Managing Director of Winhall Capital. His career reflected a rare combination of engineering expertise, strategic business acumen, and global insight.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Walt was committed to philanthropy, education, and the arts. He served several terms on the Board of Trustees at St. Timothy's School in Stevenson, Maryland. A proud moment during his retirement came from his alma mater in 2003, when he was named Outstanding Alumnus of the Year by the Penn State University College of Engineering for his professional achievements. For the last two decades of his life, Walter dedicated his time and talents to the Manchester Music Festival in Manchester, VT, serving in a variety of leadership and advisory roles that helped foster the growth of this celebrated cultural institution.

He enjoyed skiing, golf, exercising, sports, ballet, music, movies, and reading. A personal highlight of his was running in the 1997 NYC marathon, raising money to support pediatric cancer research.

Walt lived his life rooted in values that shaped the lives of those close to him. He believed deeply in education, creativity, and curiosity. He highly appreciated the disciplines of the arts and the beauty of language and literature. He held a profound respect for worldwide culture and history. Most importantly, he lived with integrity and valued family.

Walt is survived by his wife, Mary Kiefer Miller of Darien, CT and Winhall, VT; his children David Miller, Christie Goldman (Robert), Melissa Faucher, and Mary Elizabeth Scholtz (Carl); and his brothers Edward and Patrick Miller. He was actively involved in the lives of his twelve grandchildren; Michael, Charlie, Emma, Alex, Allie, James, Max, Emily, Katie, Matt, Laura, and Jocelyn, and he will be greatly missed as they grow up.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Walt's life will be planned in the coming months. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Manchester Music Festival in Manchester, VT.
