Penelope Anne Bowers Obituary

Dr. Penelope Bowers, affectionately known as "Penny," passed away peacefully at her home in Darien, Connecticut on September 1st, 2025.

Born in Manchester, UK, in 1940, Penny spent her formative years there, attending Withington Girls' School and later Manchester University UK. Medicine ran deep in Penny's roots—both her parents were physicians, and their dedication to the field inspired her to pursue her own medical degree at Manchester University, a decision that shaped her life and career.

In 1966, Penny moved to the United States and began an accomplished 30-year career in the pharmaceutical industry. As a physician and senior leader in the Drug Safety Division at Boehringer Ingelheim, she was admired for her sharp intellect, compassionate leadership, and deep commitment to drug safety.

A lifelong sailor, Penny was happiest on the water. She owned and loved her Alberg 30 sloop, VERITAS, for over 40 years. An avid racer and joyful participant in the sailing communities at Pelham Bay Marina (Pelbamar) in New York and later at Wilson Cove Yacht Club in Norwalk, CT, Penny formed countless lifelong friendships around a shared passion for sailing. She was known for her warm hospitality during "Après Sail" gatherings on her boat, at the dock, or in her home during the colder months.

Penny's adventurous spirit extended beyond sailing to a love of travel, and she explored the world extensively. Fiercely independent, Penny lived life on her own terms with courage and conviction. At the same time, she deeply valued the love, loyalty, and presence of those closest to her, cherishing the bonds she nurtured over the years with quiet strength and heartfelt gratitude.

Penny's deep love for animals was clear to all who knew her. Her beloved Beagle Fella and her Maltese dogs, Winston and Lucky, were her constant companions.

What truly set Penny apart was her boundless generosity of spirit. She had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcome, heard, and valued. Her unconditional kindness and sincere empathy made her a beloved and meaningful presence in the lives of many, both in the US and the UK.

Penny will be deeply missed by her brother Tony and his family, who remember her with love and affection, and by her extended family and many dear friends.

Penny was affectionately known as "Granty" to her 'adopted' family, the Kayhans - Gloria, Ali, Megan, and Emma — of Darien, CT, who feel truly blessed to have shared their lives with her. Granty's loving presence, encouragement, and joyful spirit were a constant in their lives, and she will be cherished always and profoundly missed.

A private Celebration of Life will follow on September 20th, 2025, to honor Penny's memory and the many lives she touched. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Penny's memory to PAWS Animal Shelter in Norwalk, CT.
