In loving memory of Margaret "Peg" Callaway Avison
Margaret "Peg" Callaway Avison, Darien, CT, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2025 at the age of 97. A resident of Rowayton and Darien for 70 years, she was a talented artist and beloved mother and grandmother, and lived a life surrounded by family, friends and laughter.
Born on June 23, 1927 to the late Catherine C. and Guy M.Callaway, she was raised in Westfield, New Jersey, maintaining lifelong friendships with her elementary school classmates. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Beaver College in Pennsylvania.
Early in her career, she worked for Guy M. Callaway Inc., applying her skills in illustration, package design and advertising layout. After marrying Alfred D. Avison in 1952, together they founded Avison Studio located in Manhattan. For a decade in the 50's and early 60's, she commuted from Rowayton into New York City, often the only woman on the train platform. For the next 25 years, Peg enjoyed a successful freelance career in Connecticut.
Peg was also a lifelong painter, enriching her artistic skills by studying at the Rowayton Arts Center and the Darien Arts Center under the guidance of distinguished artists including Alfred "Chip" Chadbourn, Pam duLong Williams, Ann Toulmin-Rothe and Bob Baxter. Peg was an avid skier beginning in the early 1950's, spending decades making the weekend drive to their house in Killington, VT. She also spent many happy summers having fun in the sun at The Tokeneke Club.
She is survived by her son, Todd Avison (Lisa) Sun Valley, ID; her daughter Kim Huffard (Flip) Darien, CT; her cherished grandchildren Alexandra Avison, Christy Avison, Phillip Huffard and Tad Huffard; and her brother Bob Callaway. She was predeceased by her husband Al Avison in 1984 and her older brother Austin Callaway.
Peg's legacy lives on in the work she created and the countless lives she touched through her love of life, deep friendships and sense of humor. She will be dearly missed. A Celebration of Life will be held July 11th in Darien.
