In Loving Memory of Genevieve "Jean" Metayer

Genevieve "Jean" Metayer, of Darien, CT, passed away on April 28, 2025 at the age of 95. A resident of Darien for 65 years and a beloved teacher in the Darien school system, Jean's legacy will live on in the hearts of her family and the students she taught.

Born in Providence, RI on December 19, 1929, to the late Michael D. Mainelli and Etta Ferrante, Jean graduated from Rhode Island College of Education and later earned an MS degree in Education from the University of Bridgeport. Jean went on to have a distinguished teaching career, dedicating more than 20 years to the Darien Public Schools at Royle and Tokeneke Elementary Schools. Jean was a gifted educator who loved her profession and had a lifelong passion for reading.

In addition to her teaching career, Jean will be remembered for her deep, abiding faith and contributions to her community. She taught CCD at St. John Catholic Church, served on the Pastoral Council, and was an active member of the Darien Community Association (DCA) where she held multiple leadership positions on the Scholarship, Philanthropy, and Thrift Shop Committees.

Jean is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, Albert F. Metayer, and her sister, Anna Picozzi of Narragansett, RI. She was predeceased by her brother, Domenic Mainelli, and sister, Lorna Mainelli. She is survived by her children, Thomas A. Metayer (Charlene) of Branford, CT, Mary Lynn Raggenbass (Marc) of Zollikon, Switzerland, and Ann Southworth (Ken) of Darien, CT, as well as her beloved grandchildren, William K. FitzMaurice (Lily) and Kathryn FitzMaurice Garza (Juan) both of Stamford, CT and many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John Catholic Church in Darien, CT. Internment will be private. Lawrence Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
