In 1969, I heard Lois Bloom give a lecture on child language in a developmental psychology course at Teachers College. That lecture changed the direction of my academic and professional life. I had recently completed a master’s degree and a year of teaching French as a foreign language. Lois’s lecture helped me understand that the teaching approach I had been trained to use put too much emphasis on language as form and not enough on language as meaning.
Over the next five years, as Lois’s student and research assistant, I explored children’s language development in terms of how language form serves the goal of communication—to share thoughts and information and to express emotions. Throughout my career as a language acquisition researcher and teacher educator in classroom second/foreign language learning, I drew on the research experience of those years working with Lois. She guided our analyses of the transcripts of children who were recorded as they spontaneously talked and played. She was a brilliant, thorough, insightful researcher and a demanding mentor. I learned so much from her.
In addition to being a mentor for my academic and professional work, Lois was a role model in other ways as well. As a wife and mother; as a gardener, cook and connoisseur of wonderful food. All those years ago I learned from her to appreciate real coffee! She was also a thoughtful courageous member of the larger community, and I will always value her example of strength, integrity, and independence.
