Obituary of George Weston Watson III
George Weston Watson III, a longtime Darien resident, passed away at the Waveny Care Center in New Canaan on August 18, 2008.
West Watson, as he was known to his friends, moved to Darien with his wife, Estelle, in 1948. Mr. Watson was an employee of Burlington Industries and its predecessor companies from 1938 until 1974. After retiring from the textile industry, he became associated with Stamford Hospital, eventually retiring as a development officer in 1997 at the age of 82.
Mr. Watson, born in New York City in 1915 and a graduate of Kent School and Princeton University, saw his professional career interrupted by the Second World War. During that conflict he served in the Navy, attaining the rank of Lieutenant and commanding various vessels, including a submarine chaser stationed in the South Atlantic. Lt. Watson also saw action in the Pacific theater.
One of Mr. Watson's great loves was the family summer home on Cape Cod in the town of Wellfleet.
Mr. Watson was predeceased by his son David, whose wife Luci is a Darien resident. He is survived by his wife Estelle and children Susan of Yonkers, NY; Kathy of Burlington, VT; and Steven of Hong Kong, as well as by nine grandchildren.
