Obituary of Mary Margaret Van Steenburgh Troy
Mary Margaret Van Steenburgh Troy, August 16, 2009. Beloved wife of the late William D. Troy, MD, of Stamford, CT. Mother of William R. Troy II (Mary) of Goshen, NY, John J. Troy of Stamford, CT, Ann M. Troy of Watervliet, NY and Sara Troy Machir (John) of Bethesda, MD. Grandmother of Meg Troy McCluskey (John) of Suffern, NY; William Patrick Troy (Jaime Harsha Troy) and Vanessa Machir of Brooklyn, NY; J. Stuart Machir of Washington DC; A. Troy Machir of Bethesda, MD., and three great-grandchildren. Margaret was a direct descendant of early Dutch settlers who founded Kingston, NY, then known as Wiltwyck, in 1661. The original VanSteenburgh house, built before 1700, is still standing. It was the only house not burned by the British when Sir John Vaughan's troops sacked and burned Kingston in 1777. Born August 28, 1914 in Kingston, NY to Anna Theresa Ryan Van Steenburgh and Walter J. Van Steenburgh. Graduated from St. Vincent's Hospital School of Nursing, New York, NY in 1935. Nursing Supervisor at St. Vincent's Hospital 1936-39; Nursing staff member, Doctor's Hospital, New York, NY 1939-1941. Following her marriage to Bill Troy in May, 1941, and military postings to Colorado and Georgia, Bill and Margaret settled in Stamford, CT, where she became a lifelong resident. Mrs. Troy was a very active volunteer at St. Joseph's Hospital, Stamford, CT for more than 40 years. She maintained an active lifestyle, attended The Sacred Heart University Learning in Retirement program, and enjoyed playing golf until her late eighties. She was a member of the Stamford Yacht Club, a former member of the Hubbard Heights Garden Club, and a former member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, having resigned her membership in 1939 when the DAR refused to permit Marion Anderson to sing at Constitution Hall in Washington, DC.
Friends may call at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien, CT on Thursday, August 20, 2009 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John R.C. Church, 1986 Post Road, Darien on Friday, August 21, 2009 at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow at St. John Cemetery, Darien.
