Obituary of Salvatore Mazzeo, Jr.

Darien native, Salvatore Mazzeo, Jr., son of the late Salvatore Sr. and Lillian (Conti) Mazzeo, passed away peacefully at Yale-New Haven Hospital on January 16, 2010. Sal was born on February 11, 1938, attended Darien schools and was a member of the Class of 1956. He attended the University of South Carolina where he played both football and baseball. Sal served in the United States Marine Corps rising to the rank of Sergeant and was a member of the Marine Corps Silent Drill Team and Presidential Guard Detachment. Sal served the Noroton Heights Fire Department as Chief for six years and President for three years. He was also a member of the Fire Commission, held the position of Darien's Civil Preparedness Director and was a member of both the Middlesex Middle School and Darien High School Building Committees. Sal was also a founding member of The Breakfast Club, a group of dads with sons involved in Darien High School athletics who met each Saturday for breakfast at Scooters (now Jake's Place). He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Elizabeth (McMurray) Mazzeo, his daughter, Andrea Mazzeo Raes and son-in-law David Raes of Indianapolis, his son, Michael Mazzeo and daughter-in-law Kimberly of Milford and four grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Sally Wynne of Greenwich and Lois Costantino of Cos Cob and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased another sister, Marie Mazzeo Fitzsimmons. Calling hours are Wednesday, January 20, 2010 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien, Connecticut. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, January 21, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's R.C. Church, 1986 Post Road, Darien. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Noroton Heights Fire Department, 209 Noroton Avenue, Darien, CT. 06820.
