Carter, Emily, 92, of Darien, died Sunday, January 31, at Stamford Hospital after a gallant five week battle with pneumonia. She was the wife of the late Attorney Aubrey James Carter.
Born on August 19, l917 in Greenwich, CT, she was the daughter of the late Catherine and Joseph Podposki of Greenwich and lived in Darien most of her life. Beloved mother of Penelope Altman of No. Scituate, RI, James Carter of Carlisle, MA, and Joseph Carter of Greenwich, CT. Sister of Julia Zieba, Greenwich, CT, Ceil Pretzman, Columbus, OH, and the late Stanley Podposki of Greenwich, CT, and Edna Deck of Greenwich, CT. Beloved grandmother to Kara and Nathan Altman, No. Scituate, RI, David and Aimee Carter, Carlisle, MA, Aubrey and Clem Carter, Greenwich, CT. Emily graduated from Greenwich High School at 16 and graduated from Simmons College, Boston, MA, four years later. She received a masters in business administration from Columbia Univ., New York, a masters in education from Conn. State Teachers' College. She taught in the elementary grades in Rowayton for fifteen years. Emily was active in her community, volunteering at the Hollow Tree PTO, volunteering at a soup kitchen in Stamford, volunteering over a thousand hours over the years at St. Josephs Hospital, Stamford, serving as president of the Fairfield County Simmons College Alumni Club.
Emily loved classical music and sang in the choir at St. John Church, Darien. She was a member of St. John Church, Darien, since 1952. She also enjoyed sewing and once took a professional sewing course from a tailor in NYC to make her husband a three piece suit! Emily was very proud that she lived in her home in her nineties and enjoyed visits with her family there. She also enjoyed activities at the Darien Senior Center.
The family had a private Mass of Christian Burial held at St. John Church and private burial at Spring Grove Cemetery all in Darien. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Emily's memory to St. John Church, 1986 Post Road, Darien, CT 06820.
