Obituary of Joseph Geruso, Jr.
Joe Geruso, loving father, grandfather and uncle, died peacefully in his sleep in the presence of his family at Stamford Hospital in the early hours of May 16, 2008. Most recently a resident of Stamford, he is survived by his daughters Anne (Larry) Tomaselli and Meg (Chris) Burdett, as well as his beloved grandchildren, Susan, Laura, Michelle, Shane and Michael. In addition, he is survived by his nephews Steve and John Geruso, and nieces Barbara Callaghan and Patti Casey. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Florence and Joseph Geruso, Sr., and only brother, Carmine (Jerry) Geruso.
Born in Brooklyn, New York on July 10, 1925, Joe was an avid baseball fan. His devotion to the Brooklyn Dodgers and then to the New York Mets was legendary, rivaled only by his love for the music of Glenn Miller. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard in the North Atlantic during World War II, first on a destroyer and then with Air-Sea Rescue. He later settled in Darien where he raised his family, working at Pitney Bowes as a graphic artist until his retirement in 1990. Joe remained active after retirement, working, painting, caretaking his grandchildren, and volunteering at local nursing homes teaching art to the residents. His amazing sense of humor and loving generosity will be remembered and missed by all who know and loved him.
A memorial mass will be held in his honor at St. John Church in Darien, 1986 Post Road, on Friday, May 23 at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Connecticut Humane Society, 701 Russell Road, Newington, CT 06111.
