Obituary of Barry Andrew McNell

Barry Andrew McNell, a life-long resident of Darien, died after a long illness at Yale-New Haven Hospital on Sunday, May 18, 2008. He was 67.
Born August 16, 1940 in New York City, Barry was the son of the late Robert Andrew and Helen Chalmers McNell. He graduated from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and served in the Army Reserves. During his investment career, he worked at Citibank, Manufacturers Hanover Trust, Paine Webber Mitchell Hutchins, and most recently as a Managing Director at William D.Witter in New York City.
Among many interests, Barry was an avid golfer, tennis player and sailor, and participated in many prestigious sailing races including the Newport Bermuda race. He was a much loved resident of Noroton Bay, serving on the Board as President and Beach Chairman, and was crowned King of the Bay. Barry was an ardent NY Football Giants fan, holding season tickets for over fifty years. He was a devoted supporter of his children's sporting teams, including the Darien Blue Wave football, gymnastics, lacrosse and sailing teams and the Brown Bears' gymnastics and lacrosse teams.
Barry is survived by his wife of twenty-six years, Gail Zimmermann McNell, his children, Jessica Holly McNell and Robert Anthony McNell, II both of Darien; his two sisters, Bonnie Trexler of Summit, NJ and Kate Brauner of Cupertino, CA; six nieces and nephews and two grand-nieces. He was pre-deceased by his brother, Michael McNell.
There will be a memorial service to celebrate Barry's life on May 22, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Noroton Presbyterian Church, 2011 Boston Post Road, Darien. Interment will be private.
