Mary Jane Costello of Darien, 86, passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2008 at Stamford Hospital. Born January 28, 1922 in Stamford, she was the only child of the late Joseph and Jane Gallagher.
Mary Jane was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy, Class of 1939 and St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Hartford in 1942.
Mary Jane began her nursing career in the operating room at St. Joseph's Hospital. In 1946, she married J. Robert Costello and together they raised ten children in Stamford. In addition to her beloved husband, Mary Jane is survived by her five sons J. Robert Jr. (Lesa) of Tulsa, OK; Gerald (Deborah) of Westport, CT; Thomas (Wade) of Fairfield, CT; Christopher (Valerie) of Farmington Hills, MI; Daniel (Michele) of Houston, TX; and her five daughters Mary Ellen Georgoulis (the late Theodore) of Norwalk; Patricia Beirne (Kevin) of Stamford; Maureen Gallagher (Donald) of Brecksville, OH; Rosemary Bedosky (John) of Stamford; and Susan Brown (Scott) of Fairfield, CT. She is also survived by her 24 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
An avid reader, Mary Jane's greatest joy was her family. She loved spending time surrounded by her children and grandchildren at her family home on Forest Lawn Avenue. Whether celebrating a holiday at the ever-expanding dining room table or enjoying a sunny afternoon around the pool, family and friends completed a wonderful life.
Mary Jane retired to Spring Hill, FL in 1994 where she enjoyed many years of retirement before returning to Darien in 2005.
Friends may call at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien on Wednesday, July 9, 2008 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John R.C. Church, 1986 Post Road, Darien on Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at St. John R.C. Cemetery in Darien.
