Obituary of Dorothy Elizabeth Webb
Please share a memory of Dorothy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dorothy Elizabeth Caldwell Webb, a long-time resident of Darien, died peacefully on July 28th at home. She was born on August 22, 1914 in Stamford, the daughter of Albert and Lillian May Caldwell. She was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Roland Baird Webb who died in 2005. She was 94.
She lived in the historical Webb House on Rings End Road for over 40 years which was the original General Store in Darien, founded by her late husband Roland Webb's ancestors in 1829. This association with the early history of Darien was something she took great pride in, and she was a knowledgeable and avid collector of early American antiques.
Mrs. Webb attended Notre Dame Academy in Ontario, Canada and graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Stamford. She was a graduate of the Traphagen School of Fashion Design in New York City and went on to work at Conde Nast in Old Greenwich as a fashion illustrator. She was a prolific artist, and studied Chinese watercolor painting under the teaching of the esteemed Mr. Lin Chia Li in New York City. She produced over 100 paintings during her lifetime.
Mrs. Webb was a life-long member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and taught Sunday School there for many years. She was also a member of the Darien Community Association, a volunteer at the Darien Historical Society, a member of the Ladies Club of Stamford, and a member of Woodway Country Club for 55 years. She greatly enjoyed nurturing and teaching her grandchildren. She was nicknamed "Go-Go" by her granddaughter when teaching her about stoplights, and the name stayed with her for the rest of her life as it perfectly captured the spirit of someone who was always "on the go."
She is survived by her two daughters, Mary Elizabeth (Betsy) Webb Hester, of Darien and Judith Ann (Judy) Webb Hough also of Darien. Her son, Roland Pond (Skip) Webb predeceased her in 2004. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Daphne Dunn of London, England, Tim Moon of Salt Lake City, UT, Lawrence Hough III of Colorado, Gregory Hough of Trumbull, CT and Tyler Hough of Winchester, MA. She is also survived by three great granddaughters and two great grandsons.
A family memorial service and burial will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Darien at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Person to Person Campership Fund, 1864 Post Road, Darien, CT 06820.
The Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, Darien is handling the arrangements.
