Obituary of Albert J. Papsun

Albert J. Papsun passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk. Born in 1917 in Darien, he was the son of the late Andrew and Elizabeth (Lasko) Papsun. He was 90. Born in a farmhouse in Darien, he was a life-long Darien resident. He was an active parishioner at St. Thomas More R.C. Church, and regularly attended meetings at the Piedmont Club, where he invariably provided vocal entertainment. For many years, he was the manager of the Garden Shop at Nielsen's Florist in Darien. Albert started his vocal training as a teenager, commuting to his vocal coach in New York. Throughout his entire life, he sang whenever an opportunity presented itself. He sang with several big bands in New York, including the Eddie Duchin Orchestra. As recently as last November, he provided a cappella entertainment to his friends and colleagues at the Darien Fire Department at their Annual Dinner held at the Darien County Club to a rousing ovation. He was one of the longest serving volunteer firemen in Darien. For many years, Albert was the manger of the Garden Shop at Nielsen's Florist in Darien. A life-long gardener, he was particularly proud of a massive holly tree gracing his front yard. The tree was often featured in area papers during the holiday season. Albert is survived by a son, Albert J. Papsun, Jr. of North Haven, CT and a daughter, Pamela Kern of Snellville, GA; and five grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Elizabeth Barna of Norwalk. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Laslo Papsun in 2006 and a brother Andrew Papsun. Friends may call at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien on Friday, August 1, 2008 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Thomas More R.C. Church, 374 Middlesex Road, Darien on Saturday, August 2, 2008 at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien.
