Obituary of Herbert Roy Lester

Herbert Roy Lester, a life long resident of Darien, passed away on Monday August 18, 2008 at the Richard L. Rosenthal Hospice Residence in Stamford. Born in 1929 in Darien, he was the only child of Helen Merritt and Herbert Clow Lester. He was the grandson of Roy Lester, who developed Birch Road, Point of Woods and surrounding areas of Darien. He was 78.
Herbert graduated from Darien High School in 1947 and Wentworth University in Boston, MA. He was the owner of Lester Electric Company in Darien CT. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Korean War, the last two years aboard William M. Wood, DDR 715 as an ET First Class.
Herbert was a member of the Nutmeg Curling Club, St. Andrew Curling Club and was a certified curling instructor. Herbert and his wife Carol curled in Canada, Scotland, The United States and Switzerland. They have won many national and international curling awards. He was a member of 3905 Century Club, Inc. Amateur Radio Club. He received his amateur radio license at age 19 his call sign is W1SYZ and continued radio communications throughout his life. He held a Connecticut Real Estate brokers license; Boy Scouts of America leader for troop #54, and a member of the Housing Authority for the Town of Darien. He was a certified master Nantucket Lightship basket craftsman, and also taught Nantucket basket making. He was a skilled woodwork furniture craftsman.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Cook Lester of Darien; two children, Christopher Lester and his wife Monica of Willington, CT; Claudia D'Iorio and her husband Marc of Darien, CT; and four grandchildren, Clinton Lester and Caitlyn Lester both of Willington, CT; and Marcus D'Iorio and Mackenzie D'Iorio both of Darien.
According to Herbert's wishes, only a visitation will be held from 1:00 to 3:30 PM on Saturday, August 30, 2008 at Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien, CT.
