Obituary of Stephen Condit Close

Stephen Condit Close, 45, a 16-year resident of Darien, CT, died on October 26, 2008 in his home following a courageous 3 year battle with cancer. His wife was by his side. Steve was born in Tunis, Tunisia on December 11, 1962 and was the son of Arthur Condit Close and Marcia Smith Close of McLean, Virginia. He attended the Langley School and St. Alban's School in Washington, D.C. Steve received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Virginia in 1984, where he was the president of Chi Psi fraternity. After moving to Princeton, New Jersey and working in the management training program at AT&T, he returned to the Tuck School at Dartmouth College and received his MBA in 1989. It was at Dartmouth College where he met his future wife. After Tuck, Steve moved to New York City and became a product manager at Tambrands, Inc. Most recently, he spent 13 years working at Lack and Daily in Westport as an executive recruiter. Steve was an avid golf and tennis player. He was a member of the Tokeneke Club, where he played on the men's tennis team, and the Silvermine Golf Club. He was also a member of Noroton Presbyterian Church where he taught church school for many years and served as a deacon from 2003 2005. Steve was a devoted sports enthusiast but not even a winning Redskins season could compare to watching his own children play sports. He coached house YMCA basketball for Katy's team for two years, Haley's team for one year, and Charlie's team for one year, twice winning the league championship. Steve coached Charlie in baseball and was a Darien Soccer Association recreation league coach for many years, also coaching Katy's travel soccer team for her U9 & U10 experience. Steve often said that some of his best times were spent playing sports with his children. Friends may call at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien on Wednesday, October 29, 2008 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. A Memorial Service will be held at Noroton Presbyterian Church, 2011 Post Road, Darien on Thursday, October 30, 2008 at 3:00 PM with Rev. David Jordan-Haas officiating. Steve is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, Barbara, and their three children, Katy, 14, Haley, 12, and Charlie, 9; his mother and father, Marcia Smith Close and Arthur Condit Close of McLean, Virginia; and his brother, Thomas Close of Clifton, Virginia.
