Obituary of Robert Dickinson Towne

Robert Dickinson Towne, 90, died Saturday, December 13, 2008, at Stamford Hospital. He was the husband of Ann (Keller) Towne. Bob was born in Schenectady, New York on January, 11 1918, son of the late Willis Lyman and Ethel Shaw Towne. He was a resident of the Stamford and Darien area for 82 years. He graduated from Stamford High School in 1934 and from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY in 1938 with a degree in industrial engineering. He was active in organizing reunions for both his high school and college, including a seventy second reunion for his high school class a few years ago. Before his retirement, he was president of the W.L. Towne Advertising Agency in New York City. He was a bridge Life Master and enjoyed ballroom dancing. He was very active with the Stamford Historical Society and several bridge groups. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford and for many years taught Sunday school and served on the Board of Trustees. While living in Darien, he served on the Representative Town Meeting. He was predeceased by his sister Willa Towne Curtis and two brothers, Stephen and Dudley Towne. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Ann Towne, two daughters, Barbara Towne Patterson of Merrimack, NH, Elizabeth Ann Towne of Old Greenwich, and one son, Douglas Ramsay Towne (Michele) of Naugatuck. He is also survived by several grandchildren: Amy Towne of Fairfield, Christopher Stone of Old Greenwich, Samantha Stone of Asheville, NC, Douglas Towne, Jr. of Naugatuck, Theresa Towne of Naugatuck, and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 17, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bennett Cancer Center, 34 Shelburne Road, Stamford, CT 06902 or to the Stamford Historical Society, 1508 High Ridge Road, Stamford, CT 06903.
