Obituary of Irene Sarah deGarmo

Irene Sarah deGarmo, 81, of Darien, CT, died peacefully on December 25th, 2008 at her home. She was born on January 29, 1927 in Stamford, CT, the daughter of Mary Louise and Thomas Murphy. She was predeceased by her mother, father and two siblings, Jane and Joyce. Her older sister Madeleine survives her. Rene, as she was known to her many friends, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and became a dental hygienist until she married in the spring of 1950 to John Jay deGarmo, also originally of Stamford, CT. She was a devoted mother to her four children, Joan, Poppy, Matthew and John Jr., grandmother to Sarah, Betsy, Mary, Christopher, Nicholas, and Sophia; and great grandmother to Rose and Ivy, all of whom survive her. She was active in a number of community charities including the Darien Red Cross and the Children's Aid Society and she regularly volunteered at St Luke's Church in the town of Darien, CT where she resided with her husband John for over fifty years. As a young girl, Rene was passionate about field hockey. In later years she loved the social aspect of golfing with her friends at Wee Burn Country Club and adored playing bridge as well. She will be missed by many. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 1864 Post Road, Darien on Saturday, January 3, 2009 at 11:00 AM.
