Herb was about the only person I knew, besides my own father, who usually thought the stupid things I did were just as funny as I thought they were. First I'd get the lecture, then he'd think of some excuse why I had to go to the store with him, and in the car, he'd pump me for details! As Blackie said, he was a Woodlawn giant, still fondly remembered here by all who knew him. My first thought when I got the e-mail from Doug ("Herb died. He wants you at the funeral.") was 'wow, that's just not something you think of Herb doing.' But now that he has, Heaven is surely a livelier place. And I'm sure he's still keeping an eye on things here. I'll see you again, Bucky (well, maybe). Rob Nagle

To Mrs. McKay, & all my friends in that house on 239th St., we share your grief. Another Woodlawn giant has moved on, a sad day for us all but i am sure with this new arrival, a busy & noisy day in heaven. A kind man who was always willing to help, make a call, or share his opinion. I remember a man who just wanted too fix things. There were great men in Woodlawn and as their stories are told many will wonder if the story exceeds reality. As the Herb McKay stories are told some people will wonder the same. Those of us who knew him, know those stories are understated. Pax

Uncle Bucky was a tremendous leader who had a positive impact on those fortunate enough to come in contact with him. He was the first to join the FDNY and God only knows how many great things were accomplished and how many lives were saved by him, Harry, Stanley, and Mark. The way he cared for Aunt Kay or "Mc Shane" as he called her was a true testement to who he was. At my wedding in 2003, he brought her up to the alter in St. Columbas, said a prayer and they both told me how nice they thought the church was. He was in love with his wife and he loved God. That is how I'll remember him. The best.

We are deeply saddened to hear the news of Herb's passing. Herb was a great friend of the Rafferty's and Fernandez family. My dear mother, Nan Rafferty often spoke of Herb and Kay and their devotion to the Blessed Mother and the Catholic faith. How fitting that Herb would die on the feast of the Immaculate Conception. My husband and I went out to Montauk once and drove past a house that was flying the American, Irish and Papal flag. I thought to myself how my parents would have loved the guy who owns that home. Later that day at Mass we met up with Herb and Kay and found out it was Herb and Kay's house who immediately invited us over for lunch! God Bless Kay and the rest of the Mckay family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. George and Noreen Fernandez (Rafferty).
