Obituary of Malcolm Tennant Dale

Malcolm Tennant Dale, 74, a resident of Darien, Connecticut for over 40 years, passed away on Saturday, January 23, at Long Ridge of Stamford. Born in New York City on February 25, 1935, Mr. Dale was the son of the late Elsie Tennant and Calvin Denike Dale. A Mayflower descendant of Stephen Hopkins, he was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. Mr. Dale grew up in Peekskill, New York. Following graduation from Peekskill High School he attended Colgate University, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and earned a B.A. degree in Economics in 1957. Mr. Dale served in the New York State National Guard at the 7th Regiment Armory in New York City. He married Saundra Elroy, of Cortlandt, NY and moved to Darien where he was a loving father of four children. His marriage ended in 1997. Over his long career of more that 50 years in the brokerage business, Mr. Dale was a partner and senior executive with Adams & Peck, Prescott Ball & Turban, Deutsche Bank Alex Brown and retired from Oppenheimer & Company in 2008. During his years in Darien Mr. Dale was a member of the Building Committees of the United Methodist Church and The Middlesex Club. He also served on the board of the Darien Young Republican Club and the Darien Republican Town Committee for four terms, and was appointed to the Darien Housing Authority. Mr. Dale was a former member of the Board of Trustees of St. Luke's School in New Canaan. He coached Little League baseball for many years and went on to coach and serve as President of the Darien Babe Ruth League. An avid sportsman throughout his life, Mr. Dale was an enthusiastic golfer and a member of Wee Burn Country Club for many years. He enjoyed afternoons on his boat on Long Island Sound and was a long time member of the Darien Boat Club. His passions included fly-fishing for Atlantic Salmon on the Grand Cascapedia in Canada and for trout on the Madison and Yellowstone Rivers in Montana. He also enjoyed hunting quail in Georgia, shooting trap and skeet, and summer vacations in Maine. He is survived by his partner, Rebecca Wotherspoon; three sons, Malcolm Tennant Dale Jr and his wife Darlene of Carthage, NC; Christopher Elroy Dale and his wife Catherine of Southbury, CT; and Thomas Stuart Dale of Torrington, CT; and by his daughter Cynthia Dale Hohman, her husband Kenneth, and their children Cecelia Ruth and Matthew Richard of Richmond, VA. He is also survived by his sister Carolyn Dale Miller of Darien, CT. Funeral services will be held at the Darien United Methodist Church, 345 Middlesex Road, at 10:00 am on Thursday, January 28th. A private burial will be held at "Hillside" the Cortlandt Cemetery, in the Town of Cortlandt, NY.
