Obituary of Muriel Gerstenmaier Nolan

Muriel Gerstenmaier Nolan, a long-time resident of Darien, died on February 3, 2008 at the Moses Ludington Nursing Home in Ticonderoga, New York at the age of 89.
Muriel Anna Gerstenmaier was born on October 24, 1918 in Darien, the daughter of Charles and Irene (Austin) Gerstenmaier. She graduated from Darien High School in 1936 and worked as a secretary in the high school office until her marriage. On December 31, 1938 she married Robert Stark Nolan in the Noroton Presbyterian Church (now the chapel), and they enjoyed 51 wonderful years together, until Bob's death in April of 1990.
Muriel worked for several years for the Probate Court of the town of Darien, and assisted her husband in the dog-grooming business which they conducted for many years. She was an accomplished artist who studied painting at several art schools in Fairfield County. She loved art, music, gardening, walking, summers at Pear Tree Point Beach, and her family. In 2007, she was recognized as a 75-year member of Noroton Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Robert Nolan, and a brother, Douglas Gerstenmaier of Vermont. She is survived and will be forever loved and missed by two daughters, Barbara Cohen (Jonathan) of Prior Lake, Minnesota and Bonnie Reid (Robert) of Paradox, New York; three grandchildren, Kevin Reid (fiance Charlotte Laird) of Burlington, Vermont, Brendan Reid of New York City, and Ilana Cohen (husband Craig Bierle) of Seattle, Washington; brother, Charles I. Gerstenmaier and wife Kay of Darien; two sisters, Ruth Leonard of Bloomfield, Connecticut and Norma Isselee of Wellsville, Pennsylvania; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
The funeral service will be held at the Noroton Presbyterian Chapel, 2011 Post Road, Darien on Friday, February 8 at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery, Darien. The Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, Darien is handling the arrangements.
